Ranking vs filtering question types

Every quiz question either filters or ranks products. A filter question removes products that don't fit. A ranking question keeps every product but moves the best fits to the top. Picking the right one per question is the difference between spot-on results and an empty result page.

Filter questions

A filter question treats the answer as a must-have:

  • Products that don't match the answer are removed from the results.
  • Shoppers only see products that meet the requirement.
  • Answers that would leave no products at all are hidden, so shoppers never walk into a dead end.

Ranking questions

A ranking question treats the answer as a preference:

  • All products stay in the running.
  • Products that match the answer score higher and move up.
  • The best overall match lands on the first result card.

When to use each type

Use a filter question when the answer is a hard requirement: a maximum budget, a size, a technical spec that has to fit, or a product type the shopper clearly doesn't want.

Use a ranking question when the answer is a preference: which features matter most, a style they like, or anything where a near miss is still a good suggestion. Ranking is also the safer choice when you worry about filtering too hard and ending up with nothing.

Examples

Filter: "What is your maximum budget?" If a shopper picks "Up to €200", products above €200 disappear from the results.

Ranking: "Which feature matters most to you?" If a shopper picks "Battery life", products with a long battery life move up, but the others still appear lower down.

Change the type of a question

The question list in Match products with the Filter or Ranking menu open on a question
  1. In the sidebar, go to Quiz funnels → All quizzes and click Edit on your quiz.
  2. Click the Match products tab.
  3. In the question list, use the small menu next to the question to switch between Filter and Ranking.
  4. Publish the quiz to make the change live.

For a ranking answer, the product count reads "match ranking rules": those products are ranked higher, the rest stay eligible.

Good to know

  • Both types use the same answer filters. The type only decides what happens to products that don't match. See Configure answer product filters.
  • Want ranking questions that still guarantee a perfect match? See Use full-match requirements.
